HP PRINTING SYSTEM FOR WINDOWS - V 6.0X/6.1X - PEER TO PEER NETWORK
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS
ISSUE: Installing an HP DeskJet 5xx/6xx/8xx printer series and
the Windows driver version 6.0/6.1 on a peer-to-peer
Windows for Workgroups (WFWG) system using direct-
connect printers.
SITUATION: The HP DeskJet 5xx/6xx/8xx printer series have never
been supported on networks; however, there is no
technical limitation that prevents the products from
working in a peer-to-peer environment in WFWG. The
reason Hewlett-Packard (HP) has not supported network
usage is because these products have been designed for
a maximum daily volume of 50 pages. Most network
scenarios will exceed this expected printing volume.
Previous versions of the HP DeskJet printer drivers
allowed the product to be shared via a "peer-to-peer"
network. While it was never officially supported by
HP, it was possible to install and use the products.
The v 6.0B/6.1D/6.1E drivers have a new architecture,
which has changed the way the driver functions in this
peer-to-peer scenario, causing the standard
configuration of the driver to not work in a shared
environment. There is a fairly easy workaround; see
below.
SOLUTION: HP recognizes that many scenarios exist in which users
wish to share one of these printers without exceeding
the recommended page volume. One of these network
scenarios is a "peer-to-peer" network. For example,
User A has an HP DeskJet printer connected to the
parallel port of their PC which is running WFWG v 3.11.
User B has a PC (also running WFWG v 3.11) connected to
User A's PC via the network and wants to print to the
HP DeskJet printer connected to User A's system.
If you wish to use the product within the volume
guidelines, the driver can be installed for peer-to-
peer usage. However, not all of the advanced feedback
features of the printer driver are available; see the
notes at the end of this document for specific
limitations. Hewlett-Packard recognizes that the
manual installation process described in this document
is not optimal. HP is investigating how to better
integrate the HP DeskJet 5xx/6xx/8xx printer drivers
with network usage.
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE: The instructions below are based on each
user having his/her own local copy of
Windows (i.e. Windows must be on the
local hard drive). The user who has the
printer connected locally will have full
functionality of the HP DeskJet printer.
The remote user will be able to print,
however, will have limited communication
with the printer. The limitations are
listed at the end of this document.

INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS
Both users will need to install the v 6.1 driver using the normal
quick install procedure from the Windows Program Manager (A:\Setup
/q). User B will receive installation error messages stating that
"no printer is found." This is as expected, simply choose OK
through the messages.
Once the drivers are installed, User A will need to add the
following line to the DESKJETC.INI file (located in the
Windows/System directory). In the [personalities] section, add
the line 5PERS0=HPVDOS.DLL.
It will look like this:
[personalities]
5MaxPersonalities=02
5PERS1=DESKJETC.DRV
5PERS2=HPVDOS.DLL
5PERS0=HPVDOS.DLL
\ (the number zero not letter O)
For users with an HP DeskJet 540 or 600 printer the following
change must be made in the remote user's DESKJETC.INI file if the
color kit has been purchased and is to be used.
change from: 2colorupgrade=0000
change to: 2colorupgrade=0200
NETWORK LIMITATIONS
Lack of bidirectional communication across the network limits the
printer status information available to the remote user. This
results in the following issues for the remote user (User B):
1. Clean print cartridge and Align print cartridge from the HP
DeskJet printer Status Monitor Maintenance menu are not possible.
(These tasks can be done through the directly connected User A.)
2. Error feedback (such as out of paper), available from the HP
DeskJet printer Status Monitor only. Print Manager on the remote
(User B) system will not provide any error messages. The user
will need to manually open the Status Monitor. Any error will be
reported as "port not responding." If the error condition is
resolved, the job will print.
3. No print cartridge data mismatch messages for single print
cartridge products (HP DeskJet 500C, 540, and 600 printers). The
printer will print with the data (color or black) with the print
cartridge currently installed. For example, color data sent to a
printer with a black print cartridge would print in grayscale
with no error message.
